Mold is a homeowner’s worst nightmare! No matter how hard you try to avoid it mold sometimes appears. Carpets are a common target for mold growth as it easily attracts moisture and dirt. Here are steps for keeping your carpets mold-free:
Control the indoor humidity:
- Mold loves moisture and humidity! Mold spores reproduce in humid areas or areas with an abundant amount of moisture. If you live in a humid area, installing a dehumidifier would be very beneficial for your home. Keeping your thermostat in your home below 80 degrees would also help.
Remove standing water as fast as possible:
- Mold needs only a small amount of water and time (24-48 hours) to grow. If you have a water damage, always remove the water and dry the carpet even if the damage was minor, such as if a drink spills or anything. Make sure there’s not any moisture trapped underneath the carpet as well.
Keep carpets clean:
- Dirt and dust are sources that mold attaches to so you need to get rid of these sources immediately. Make sure you have an operating vacuum cleaner and make sure to vacuum your carpets on a weekly basis.
