How to Prepare for Thunderstorms

When thunderstorms happen it also could possibly bring hazards like lightning, flash flooding, tornadoes, strong winds, and hail. Flash flooding is the deadliest thunderstorm-associated hazards. Here a few tips on how to stay safe when thunderstorms come around:
If you’re outdoors:
- Make sure to get inside a sturdy building. Don’t take shelter in small sheds or barns, under trees, or any automobiles that doesn’t have a hard top.
- If a sturdy building is unavailable:
- Get inside an automobile with a hardtop and make sure all doors and windows are securely shut. Don’t touch any surface that could electrocute you.
- Don’t attempt to drive to safety you can very easily get swept away in flood waters.
- If you are in the woods, take shelter under small trees that are surrounded by taller trees or find a dry, low area.
- If your city is prone to having a lot of flooding, move to higher ground.
- Stay out of water and avoid water at all possible and get out of small boats or canoes.
- Avoid metal objects, such as clothes lines, and fences lightening can strike anywhere.
If you’re indoors:
- Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches. Stay in the middle rooms of the building or home, and keep curtains and blinds closed.
- Avoid using corded phones use wireless cell phones instead if needed.
- Don’t use electrical equipment or appliances during a storm. Unplug all utilities during the storm and do not cut them back on until the storm is over.
- Avoid water at all costs, no showers, no baths, no washing your hands, or washing clothes.
- Bring all valuables outside inside the house or garage.
- Make sure to bring pets inside before the storm hits also.
