How to Handle Flood and Storm Damage

10/31/2019 (Permalink)

After a water or storm damage, you should act immediately to prevent further damage to your home. Getting through this experience is really difficult, but you can recover from the disaster more by following guidelines. The following tips can help you renew your home after experiencing flooding or storm damage:

  • Call your insurance company as soon as possible so you can file a claim and discuss what is next.
  • Check your pipes inside and outside your home. If necessary, shut off the home’s water supply if need be. When you have plumbing issues don’t leave it up to yourself to fix the problem call in a professional to fix the issue.
  • Check your roof for damaged or missing shingles. Severe storms can rip the shingles off your roof which will then cause a leak and then could lead to a water damage. If there a few shingles missing try to cover it until you can get a professional to come and fix the roof.
  • Disconnect your appliances that have had their power source exposed to water. Have them looked at before you power them back on. In case of sparks or frayed wires, or even wires that have been submerged in floodwater, call an electrician as soon as possible. Until electrical issues are solved do not turn the power on.
  • As far as water damage restoration goes, your best plan to restore your home is to call your local SERVPRO.
  • If your automobile is damaged after the storm, make sure to notify your insurance agent, and cover broken windows if you can salvage the car.
