Winter is among us, that means frozen pipes! Frozen pipes lead to a much greater problem, flooding. There are ways to prevent frozen pipes and help protect your home from them and a water damage.
Here are some tips to help prevent damage from frozen pipes and a water damage when away from your home:
- Shut off the water supply and drain pipes or appliances.
- Have a friend or neighbor check on your home and make sure everything is okay while away.
- Have emergency numbers for a plumber, electrician, roofer, and of course your local SERVPRO.
- Protect your pipes from freezing by insulation.
- Have your HVAC system checked before leaving if you will be away for a long period of time.
- Set your thermostat at an appropriate temperature before leaving
- Before leaving your home turn off your hot water heater.
- Clean gutters of leaves or debris to ensure that water can drain properly.
- Unplug all nonessential electric appliances.
Freezing pipes can be dangerous. Following the guidelines above could save your home and your family from severe harm or damage.
