Winter storms have great potential of severely impacting your home. The most severe winter storms bring snow, ice, sleet, as well as strong winds and severely low temperatures. Here are some things you should think about to prepare for a winter storm:
Have an emergency kit You should always have an emergency just in case a storm hits and you lose power someone gets hurt or anything at all. Things that your emergency kit should include is plenty of water, food that doesn’t ruin, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and first-aid supplies. You may also have a separate first-aid emergency kit.
Insulate pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. If you plan to leave home, leave the heat on in your home to an appropriate temperature to prevent frozen pipes.
Maintain heating equipment. Have your furnace, wood stove or fireplaces inspected and cleaned thorough and regularly every year to ensure they are working properly.
Ensure fire safety. Make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working by testing them every month. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your home and on every level of the home.
If there is a winter storm warning in your area, take precautions immediately. Avoid driving and if you’re already driving,be extremely scareful and safe. Your safety and your families safety is first priority always. Use these guidelines to ensure that you and your family stay safe in case of a winter storm.
