How to Prevent a Water Damage in your Bathrooms
3/22/2022 (Permalink)
Water is used in bathrooms every day, so it’s very possible to have a water damage from this area. And soon enough, it could lead to mold issues. Here are some tips on how to prevent water from ruining your bathroom:
Check for signs of leaks regularly:
- Such as discoloration on walls or floors, and musty smells. Touch the walls to check and see if any areas are softer than others. Look for leaks under vanities and ensure there are no leaks coming from the sink. If any of these problems exist, find the leak source have it fixed immediately.
Repair or replace cracked, broken or missing tiles:
- This will allow water to flow in behind walls and under floors. Do the same for cracks or decaying along sinks, tubs, and showers.
Test valves:
- For your toilets, showers, and sinks regularly check and make sure they are working properly. Look for wet spots or stains around them that could indicate a leak.
Upgrade your fixtures:
- If your appliances are old, upgrade those to save water and potential water damage in the future.
If your sink drains slowly:
- The drain may be clogged with something. There are DIY mixtures you can use and there are mixtures you can go buy at the store. If you are unable to get the sink unclogged then call a professional to help.
Only flush toilet paper down the toilet:
- Do not flush anything but toilet paper down the toilet anything else will clog toilet and pipes and could cause back flow.
Turn on your exhaust fan:
- Every time you shower you need to turn your fan on. The fan helps pull excess moisture out of the air, preventing it from entering your walls and causing mold to grow.
Place bathmats on the floor:
- To minimize the risk of excess water building up outside your shower place bathmats down in front of tubs and showers.
There’s always a chance that water could cause damage in your bathroom, but as long as you take these tips, you could prevent water damage. Call SERVPRO of Corinth/Iuka at (662) 287-7881 if you have any questions at all. We are always here to help!

Water Damage During Winter
10/26/2021 (Permalink)
Water can damage your home even in winter. Uninsulated water pipes can freeze and burst, and ice dams can form on your roof. Moreover, thawed snow can enter your basement, causing water damage from flooding. But don’t worry yet – here’s what you can do to prevent winter water damage in your home:
Preventing Frozen Pipes
- Insulate water pipes in unheated areas, such as the crawl space, basement, garage, attic, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
- Allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbingby opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors. Move the products stored in these cabinets up, out of the reach of children and pets.
- Let cold water drip from the faucets served by exposed pipes. Running even a trickle of water through pipes helps prevent them from freezing.
- Set the thermostat to the same temperature during the day and at night. Your heating costs may rise, but you’ll prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
- If you’re leaving home for a day or more, set the thermostat to at least 55° F. Shut off the water supply and drain pipes and appliances that use water. In addition, have someone you trust check your home once per week.
Preventing Ice Dams
- Remove the snow on your roof when it’s about six inches deep. Use a roof rake or a long-handled brush to remove the snow without a ladder.
- Make sure that downspouts are clear so that melted water can drain properly.
- More long-term solutions to prevent ice dams include:
- Insulate the attic to prevent warm air from entering. Warm air can melt the snow on the roof, which refreezes, forming ice dams.
- Ensure your attic is properly ventilated. Warm air should escape through vents near the top of the attic. Cold air should flow in through vents near the eaves.
- Install a water membrane underneath the roof shingles. It helps prevent water from seeping in.
- Install a snow shield to prevent leaks. The shield goes under the shingles starting from the low edge of the roof and extending up at least three feet inside the exterior wall of the house.
- Install gutter screens to help keep out the debris that causes build-up and damage.
Other Winter Water Damage Safety Tips
- Install water leak detectors anywhere a water problem may occur, such as on sump pumps, near water-bearing fixtures, and behind or beneath pipes.
- Check water supply lines yearly for leaks. Inspect your hot water heater, washing machine, ice machine in your refrigerator, and other appliances that can leak.
- Get sewage- backup coverage, which is usually not included in your homeowner's insurance. Heavy rains and melting snow can overload your storm water system, causing water or sewage to back up into your home.
- Disconnect outdoor hoses if you aren’t using them. This prevents water from freezing in the line, creating a blockage that can cause back-flow.
- Clear snow around your home’s foundation. Melting snow and ice can cause leaks in vulnerable areas of your foundation.

How to Prevent Washing Machine Water Damage
3/21/2019 (Permalink)
Water damage from washing machines is one of the main causes of water damages in homes. The good news is that preventing washing machine leaks is not as hard as you may think. Follow these few tips to avoid water damage issues caused by your washing machine in your home:
- Don’t overload the washing machine with laundry: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how full your washer should be. Distribute clothes evenly and loosely inside the machine. Packing it too full will cause overfill of water and soap and it will end in disaster.
- Install a water leak detector: Install it near the washing machine so you can receive any alerts about leaks.
- Use the right detergent:Using the right and correct amount of detergent to avoid excess suds and bubbles that can cause the washer to overflow.
- Regularly check water supply hoses: Check hoses for cracks or any other damages. Replace damaged hoses with new and approved types of hoses.
- Replace hoses every five years:Hoses do deteriorate so its very important to replace them when they need to be replaced.
- Check the drain hose:Check for wear and tear of the drain hose and make sure it’s tightly inserted into the main drain line.
- Leave at least four inches of space: Having space will help the hoses stay uncoiled or kinked up so they don’t bust or tear and cause a water damage.
- Turn off water to both supply valves: Also if going on vacation or just going to be a gone for a few day always turn off your water valves.
We at SERVPRO of Corinth/Iuka are specialized in water restoration so if you ever have an incident where your washing machine causes a water damage or any other water damage we are always here to help! Call us at (662) 287-7881 if you have questions or need water restoration services!

How to Prevent Water Damage in Your Bathroom
3/19/2019 (Permalink)
Tips on How To Prevent a Water Damage in Your Home
3/18/2019 (Permalink)
Any amount of water can cause great damage to your home. Water can sometimes find its way into your home, through the roof, basement or other area, and the result can end in water damage and mold growth. However, it is possible that you can try and prevent water damage in your home by following a few steps:
- Clean and maintain gutters:If there are leaves, sticks, debris or anything that is blocking the water from coming out of your gutters, water may overflow onto the side of your home. When cleaning your gutters, check for cracks and have them repaired immediately.
- Have your roof checked for cracked or missing shingles. To prevent ice buildup in freezing winter weather, insulate your attic to prevent it from heating up.
- Install back flow valves and standpipes at all drain locations, sinks and toilets. These mechanisms help prevent a sewage back up in your home.
- Don’t pour grease down the sink! Grease tends to cling to pipes and cause water blockage. Dispose grease outside away from your home or store it in a jar and throw it away.
- Routinely check your home for leaks:Check areas like ceilings, under pipes inside sink cabinets, or around sinks and toilets. Immediately fix any cracks or leaks you find immediately.
- If your water bill is unusually high: If you notice your water bill is higher than it usually is, this is probably a sign that there is a leak somewhere in your home. Call a professional to come check your home before any damage is done.
- Inspect appliances that use water.
- When you leave home on business, vacation, holiday travel, etc. make sure to turn your water valve off.
- Do not operate washer/dryer, and dish washer when going to sleep or leaving the home.
- Inspect water supply hoses on your washing machine, dishwasher, and etc. yearly for safe precaution. Check and repair any damages you may find immediately.

Can Your Carpet Be Saved from Water Damage?
3/5/2019 (Permalink)
You can save your water damaged carpet depending on how bad the damage is and how long it was left wet. Considering carpeting in homes can be a very pricey expense, saving it is better than having to spend a great amount of money trying to replace it.
To see if your carpet can be saved and renewed, first see what kind of water damaged the carpet. There are three categories of water that we classify individual jobs under according to what kind of water is present at the job.
- Category 1: Clean water from a broken pipes or a leak from the roof and rainwater gets in, is consider clean water. There is a great possibility of saving the carpet that has been damaged if the carpet has been wet for less than 24-48 hours. If the carpet has been wet longer than that the water may degenerate into the next category which is category 2. We can restore both the padding and the carpet through proper remediation processes.
- Category 2: Greywater which is considered contaminated water. This type of water can cause sickness if swallowed or have contact with the body. This typical water comes from damages from overflowing washing machines or dishwashers, overflowing toilets is a big cause of water damages, and etc. With this type of water loss, the padding will have to be replaced, but the carpet can be recovered. Category 2 loss requires treatment within 24-48 hours, or it will degenerate into a Category 3 water loss.
- Category 3: Blackwater is considered highly contaminated with harmful bacteria or other harmful agents. Examples of blackwater water loss includes sewage issues, back flowing toilets, flooding from the sea, rivers, streams, and water that follows from storms like hurricanes. It’s nearly impossible to restore carpet saturated with Category 3 water, even for carpet cleaning professionals.
Do it yourself or Call SERVPRO?
- Extracting the water yourself has some perks, obviously calling in professionals to do the work is safer and more efficient than trying to do it yourself. A shop vacuum, towels, and ceiling fans do not compare to what products and equipment that professionals use to extract water and remediate damaged carpet. Plus, a professional can observe and assess the entire water damage and mitigate and remediate the entire loss as a whole, and not just the carpet itself.
- The mitigation process must begin immediately, because the carpet can suffer from permanent damage. After suffering a water damage call a professional service like SERVPRO immediately so our professionals can get to work and so we are able to salvage and prevent further damage to your property.
- Our goal is to salvage the carpet and help restore it. We want to save our customers from having to replace the padding and carpet because we understand the expenses that follow with purchasing new padding and carpet.
- After a flooding incident, always call your insurance company. The damage that has been done to your home might be covered by your homeowners insurance, but some flooding losses are not covered by insurance. Make sure to take pictures and videos and file an insurance claim if it can be covered by your insurance.
For any of your carpet water damage restoration needs, call SERVPRO of Corinth/Iuka at (662) 287-7881 and we will gladly help you recover from your water loss.
Preventing Water Damage During Winter Months
11/2/2018 (Permalink)
For flood water damage repair and water removal services, contact your local SERVPRO office at (662)-287-7881.
How to prevent Air Conditioner Water Damages
3/21/2018 (Permalink)
Your air conditioning unit is susceptible to leaks, which can lead to water damage, if you do not perform several maintenance tasks periodically. The good news is that these routine tasks are rather easy to do and do not involve hiring a professional most of the time. Here are the most frequent causes for A/C leaks with tips on how to fix and prevent them:
- The drain line is clogged – the drain line is a pipe which collects the condensed water that your A/C unit has produced and transports it outside your house. Sometimes, the drain line gets clogged with algae, dirt, mineral deposits and even mold or mildew, causing water to overflow into your home. Tips:
- If the drain pipes are clogged, try using a wet-dry vacuum to suck out the water and debris from the outdoor drain pipe.
- To prevent drain lines from clogging, pour a mix of half warm water, half bleach into the pipe once every 4 to 6 months, but make sure the pipes are not clogged first.
- Consider installing an overflow shut off device on the drain line to automatically turn off the A/C unit if the drain line backs up.
- The overflow drain pan is damaged - the drain pan collects any water that has overflowed due to a clogged drain line. Over time, drain pans made of metal or plastic may get damaged, resulting in leaks and water damage. Tips:
- If you notice leaks near the drain pan, carefully inspect it for damage using a flashlight.
- Consider patching up small holes or cracks using epoxy glue or replacing the pan entirely.
- The air filter is dirty – air filters should be replaced once every 1 to 2 months (every month during the cooling season); failing to do so will restrict the airflow to the evaporator’s coils. Consequently, water can freeze on the coils and, when it melts, it will drip water. Change the filters periodically to prevent this from happening.
Protect Your Attic Pipes from Freezing
3/9/2018 (Permalink)
In states that see cold winters, you never see plumbing pipes in attics, and for good reason. But in the South, it’s not uncommon for homes that are built on a slab foundation to have plumbing systems and pipes in the attics. It’s a logical place to house these key elements of the home, but the gamble is they’ll be safe there. And for the most part, there is never an issue. That is, until that crazy cold system blows through and causes extremely low temperatures.
Have you ever been up to your attic lately? If not, peek your head up there and see what you find.
Insulate any attic pipes that transfer water!
If you look up in your attic and find exposed pipes, you really need to take immediate action. Luckily the cold weather is almost over for a while, so you’ve got some time to protect your home against flooding. Here is what you need to do:
Go to your local home improvement store and buy some pipe insulation material. It’s not very expensive and it’s extremely easy to place over your pipes. Make sure that you don’t leave any area exposed, including joints where sections of pipe connect. So before you go to the store, you need to go up into your attic and take inventory.
In one Saturday’s worth of work, you can end up saving yourself thousands of dollars. Because the reality is if you end up with a burst pipe in your attic due to freezing, the amount of water damage is going to be extensive. Within minutes, water will travel throughout your attic, down your wall cavities and through your ceiling. It can potentially flood every floor of your home within a few minutes.

Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Corinth/Iuka basement could flood, including:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
- Storm sewer backup
- Sanitary sewer backup
- Foundation drainage failure
- Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
- And many more
